Zwischenzug

In this lesson we practice with the 'zwischenzug' or intermediate move. With a clever intermediate move we improve our position, so we can defend well or win more material.

Intermediate moves are forced moves that allow us to distract our opponent. Fortunately, as you have reached this lesson, you know how to apply forcing moves!

In this position we have two problems at once:

  • our bishop is under attack
  • and even worse: the opponent threatens to mate us

Instead of immediately moving our bishop, we first play an intermediate move to get rid of the mate threat.
