Special attacks: discovered attack (1)
There’s more than one way to make a double attack. This lesson focusses on the discovered attack (or disco for short). Discovered attacks have a real surprise element. They are great for pestering your opponent.
For a disco you need two pieces that are lined up in a straight line. By moving the front piece out of the way, the back piece suddenly attacks. Nasty trick!
Have a look at example 1. White places a discovered attack, but that is not a real problem for Black. He can simply move away.
In example 2, things are different. The front piece attacks the king, the back pieces attacks another piece. This discovered attack wins White points!
Example 3 shows that you can also use a disco to attack two enemy pieces.
Now you have seen it: discovered attacks can be a real pain in the ass. With sly play you can win points.
What do you have to do?
Use a discovered check to win material. Both the front piece and back piece are attacking something.
