Capturing

In chess, you can capture pieces of the other player. You don’t put them in prison, but you take them off the board.

You take a piece by simply replacing it.
The piece is taken off the board.

What do you have to do?
Capture all Black’s pieces.
But be careful. Sometimes the black pieces help each other.
One piece can defend another piece.
You can’t capture a black piece if it is defended by one of its friends.
If you don’t pay attention, your own piece will be taken!

A piece that is protected is called a defended piece.
An undefended piece is called a loose piece.

Look at example 3. The black rook is protecting the black knight. The knight is defended.
That is why you must take the rook before you capture the knight.
